The assignment: write, and draw a picture of what you did for the Eid holiday/fall break.
After ten minutes of so of remarkably concentrated work from the class (doesn’t usually happen) –
Me: “Umm.. Howdem, what is this?”
Howdem: “Teacher, my father killed three cows for Eid and I helped him.”
Me: “Okaay.. what did you do with the cows after?”
Howdem: “We gave some of the meat away and then ate a cow. There was one boy cow and two girl cows.”
Me: “Sounds delicious.”
If you ask Kurdish students what they did over the holidays, there’s a good chance they were helping to slaughter a cow or two. You know, the usual stuff you do during school vacations.
